Prepare Your Flower Bed
Ordered? Great, your plants are on their way! While you're waiting, you can prep your flower bed or planter. Don't worry, it's easier than it sounds.
An empty bed or planter is ideal, but existing plants are no problem. As long as there's space for your new We Say Grow plants, you can leave the thriving ones be.
Dig and Weed: Use a garden fork to dig over the soil, removing any weeds or large stones. This gives your new roots room to spread.
Now sit back and wait for your delivery!
The tools of the trade
Before you get started, gather your tools. You can find these at your local garden center, supermarket, or in our shop. Invest in quality tools, and they'll last a lifetime.
The Essentials:
• Spade
• Garden fork
• Hand trowel
• We Also Recommend:
Gardening gloves
• Hand fork
• Secateurs
• Watering can
RHS Resources (For the Keen Beans)
We believe in easy gardening, but if you're curious about the technical stuff, the RHS has tons of information. But remember, our collections are designed to thrive in most soil types and conditions, so you can relax and focus on the fun part.
Receiving Your Plants
As soon as your plants arrive:
Unpack and Air: Open the box and let your plants breathe!
Water (If Needed): If the soil feels dry, water each pot thoroughly until it drains. Or, place the pots in a shallow tray of water for about an hour.
Don't Rush: Your plants are fine in their pots for a week or so, but they'll be happiest in the ground, so plant them as soon as you can.
Hot Weather Tip: If it's hot, follow steps 1-3 and then WATER, WATER, WATER!
Laying Out Your Plants
Time to get creative! Each We Say Grow collection includes a planting guide that matches the stickers on your plant pots. You can follow it, or create your own masterpiece!
Here are three ways to approach your layout:
Follow the Plan: Use our planting plan and match the stickers.
Freestyle with Stickers: Refer to the stickers and arrange the plants as you like.
Go Wild: Unleash your inner artist and create your own layout entirely.
Once you've chosen your approach, place the pots on the soil to see how they look. Leave about 15-20cm between pots for growth. If a pot has a little green sticker, plant three of those together, about 5cm apart. When you're happy, it's planting time!
How to Plant Your Collection
Dig: Dig a hole slightly bigger and deeper than the pot.
Remove: Take the plant out of the pot.
Place: Put the plant in the hole.
Fill and Snug: Fill the hole with soil and gently press it around the plant.
Water: Give your new plant a good drink! Water regularly for the first few days, especially if it's hot.
A Note on Planting into Pots: Only repot plants into larger pots if that's their final home.
Watering
Newly Planted (Ground): Water while they're settling in or during hot weather.
Containers: Water after planting, about once a week normally, and daily in a heatwave. Soak the soil thoroughly, but avoid overwatering.
Wilting Plants: If plants in the ground look sad and saggy, give them some water.
Timing: Water in the early morning or evening when it's cooler.
Aim: Water the soil at the base of the plants, not the leaves.
Looking After Your Plants (No TLC Needed!)
Our perennial plants are low-maintenance.
Weeds: Pull out any unwanted plants.
Fertilizer: No need to fertilize!
Autumn/Winter: Cut back dead flower heads and stems in late autumn or early March.
Dividing: Every 3 years or so, lift and divide plants to keep them vigorous.
Be Patient
Gardening is a journey. Things might not always go as planned, and that's okay! Embrace the process, be patient, and enjoy watching your garden grow.
